Metempsychosis
Flicking through In Flames I was inspired to throw some more ideas around for the game Tristan and I have been working on.
There is a nonphysical simulation network called the Nether inhabited by god-like souls, calling themselves Eidolon. These eidolon can temporarily possess lesser physical lifeforms and communicate with them in their dreams.
They are all that remains of a previously fallen super advanced human civilization, though a few Conduits still exist.
These conduits are temple like places that can create long term host forms for the eidolon. They are jealously guarded by the eidolon who control them, as they are the only means to take a physical form in the material world that can express an Eidolon's full power, there they are served by lesser peoples who worship them as gods incarnate.
The player characters are eidolon. Not exactly sure what they do yet.
Character
Attributes
Core: This is the permanent non-physical part of the eidolon character that carries over from host to host.
A core has three attributes
Mind (perception and intelligence),
Rapport (social ability and influence) and
Focus (self control and willpower)
A certain number of D6s are spread between these three attributes at character creation.
Shells and Vessels: Shells are bodies specially made to host a eidolon's core for long periods of time and able to channel their power, vessels are temporary host bodies. Hosts have one attribute sometimes two (usually in the case of specially engineered warforms.)
Body (strength, agility and stamina)
and sometimes,
Armour (unlike the other attributes armour isnt rolled, it instead subtracts from incoming damage)
Rolls are dice pools of d6s equal to the characters attribute + skill +/- modifiers.
Roll is compared to opponent's roll or a default target number.
The Eidolon will have some cool default powers related to what they can do while disembodied eg, travel out of body, enter dreams, psychic abilities etc.
More to come.

Re: Metempsychosis
Thinking about it a bit more, maybe we should call this game Host as that is what a lot it revolves around.
It just rolls off the tongue better than metempsychosis.

Re: Metempsychosis
i really do like the idea. Its like the opposite aspect of what i have been working on where you are giving physical form to these godlike ancient spirits my ideas are normal man escaping from there bodies and going in to the other domain the evolution of the internet. but host is a cool name but i think some between the two would be better.
Re: Metempsychosis
The Eidolon can be the enemy and the pcs have somehow found a way to upload themselves into the Nether and are fighting against the Eidolon for enslaving their people, becoming the thing they are fighting against.

Hang on a sec I think we are looking at the same thing from the opposite ends.
The Nether is the ultimate evolution of the internet in the far future, a simulation network so advanced it has transcended the physical realm and is the home of the souls of humankinds distant descendants (the Eidolon) the lowborn humans that the Eidolon lord over are the descendents of scattered colonists that never joined the exodus into the Nether all those millenia ago.
The difference is that I am writing from the perspective of the lowborn, to them the eidolon would seem to be gods. Think the matrix crossed with stargate.
