Travellers
In a bygone era they were seers and shamans, in some parts of the world they still are.
The few who know about them call them Travellers. Most of the time it is a near death experience or some other trauma. But whatever the trigger is it weakens the bindings that keep the soul tethered to the body, this causes it to shift into the earth's shadow - a mad nightmare realm, where the spirits of objects and concepts live and breathe, fighting and feeding on one another. If the new traveller returns he finds he is still plagued with visions and hallucinations- though there are fewer of them, there are spirits on our side of the veil as well.
Many end up huddled around trashcan fires or gibbering in asylums, but some retain their sanity and go on to exploit their abilities.
With practice Travellers can step out of their bodies and remain near the waking world, watching unseen like a ghost, project into another's dreamscape, gain wisdom from their own dreams, summon spirits and bond with an entity from the otherside.
They are the woman sitting at the haunted crossroads surrounded by candles, the homeless man who spawns urban legends each time he leaves his body in a stinking alley, the strange group of people who meet in a rundown boiler room for "sessions."
Travellers have potent abilities, but must leave their bodies behind to use many of them.
